2022 Safety Evaluation of Existing Dams (SEED) Seminar
Date/Time: The SEED Seminar will be held from Monday, July 18 through Friday, July 22, 2022, and will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday will be a half day from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., with an optional Lab Tour from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Bldg. 56. All times are Mountain Standard Time (MST).
Location: Sheraton Denver West Hotel (360 Union Blvd, Lakewood, CO 80228)
Course Description: The seminar emphasizes the importance of dam safety and provides information and instruction in dam safety surveillance, including periodic review of pertinent records, visual examination, and monitoring of instrumentation. Hydrologic, seismic and geologic considerations, concrete repair, mechanical equipment, failure modes, remedial measures for dams, and emergency action planning are also discussed. This seminar is tailored for engineers, technicians, maintenance personnel, and administrators responsible for dams. There will be a site visit to a local Colorado dam for a simulated dam examination.
There will be three concurrent workshops being presented on Thursday, July 21, 2022, to provide more information on the following subject areas:
• Engineering Geology and Dam Safety Workshop presents an introduction to geologic investigation and evaluation relative to dam safety static and seismic issues.
• Evaluation and Response to Seepage and Internal Erosion Concerns presents internal erosion processes and failure modes, types of sinkhole formations, and approaches for investigating and responding to seepage, piping and uplift conditions.
• Emergency Management presents key elements of a dam owner’s responsibilities regarding facility operations in response to emergencies, namely detection, decision making, and notification and how to exercise those responsibilities through simulated events.
Continuing Education Units (CEUs): Full seminar completion is approximately 3 CEUs. Each CEU equals 10 Professional Development hours or 10 contact hours of instruction. Certificates of attendance will be available at the conclusion of the seminar. Participants must attend the field trip in order to be granted a certificate of attendance.
What you will learn: The seminar is part of the professional development required for Dam safety surveillance.
Who should attend: This workshop is tailored to inspectors, engineers, technicians, O&M personnel, Tribal employees, and water district staff who operates or maintains Reclamation infrastructure.
Tuition: There is no cost for this training.
Lodging: Rooms are on hold for attendees at the Sheraton Denver West for the group rate of $149. You can make a reservation online or by calling. These rooms are only on hold until June 26, 2022.
